Often made in the traditional “ clarete ” style and mainly in the Rioja Alta, these rosados are a blend of red and white grapes which give the resulting wine a fresh, mineral, and, as Miguel Merino says, “electrical” quality. The region is located in northern Spain along the Ebro River, where ancient Romans cultivated grapes as far back as 200 B.C.E. Leading up to 1925, the region sought to ensure the protection of the quality and origin of Rioja wines.
